Scania trucks are made specifically for the European market, where gross weights are lower. Also, most tractors in Europe are still cab - overs, which have become rather scarce in North America.
I drove a brand new 2013 Pete for 22 months, old cab, floor - mounted clutch pedal, DEF and all. No problems with the smog controls; however the truck was still low mileage. The overall build quality of Petes out of Denton, TX., was quite low, as was the local dealer support. Power windows didn't roll down, or stayed down, the driver's side windshield leaked into the dash and floor, and a sister truck had the entire electrical system shut down, stranding the truck in Seattle's Terminal 46 for 6 hours. That same truck also suffered a cracked cylinder head ( PACCAR motor ) at less than 16,000 miles. Lotsa problems with the ABS and 7 - way circuits too.
I currently drive a 2004 Freightliner; only 200,000 + miles and the interior is already falling apart. The driver's inside door panel broke in half at the latch, disabling the door and lock and forcing me to exit through the passenger door, which thankfully doesn't lock at all !!! Freight Shakers are plentiful up here in the PNW, probably because they are made in Portland. Also, several large carriers ( Gordon, Swift, Interstate ) have used truck sales lots in the area. They are DIRT - CHEAP, in more ways than one...
