Did you know that Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo has a fully operational 1/3-scale, 19-inch steam railroad? And it is centrally located in Davenport, CALIFORNIA!!

It is the Swanton Pacific Railroad [SPRR]; located on the Swanton Pacific Ranch property- about 3 miles North of the town of Davenport on Hwy 1, near Santa Cruz. The railroad is operated and maintained by about 140 volunteers that come from all over. Those that participate always say what a rewarding experience. It is that experience that we want to share with you, family, and your friends, as many are unaware of this wonderful “hands-on,” operational historical museum.

SPRR has a strong historical background:
• starting out by being located on part of the old right-of-way of the Ocean Shore Railroad that once ran from Santa Cruz to Swanton
• most of the locomotives and cars were built for the Pan-American International Exposition of 1915 held in San Francisco
• AND, it is the only university with its very own railroad.

If you are a railroad enthusiast/hobbyist, Cal Poly Alumni, or someone just looking for a fun place to volunteer and be made aware of the Swanton Pacific Railroad, we are inviting you, family, and your friends, to an Open-House to tour the Swanton Railroad facilities, ride the train, and hopefully spark an interest in recruiting you as a volunteer and to get actively involved. This park-like setting provides opportunities to work in a “hands-on” environment within fully equipped shops, a roundhouse, on a Christmas tree farm, to help out in or with the picnic/BBQ area, or train and become qualified railroad operators, i.e. brakeman, conductor, fireman or an engineer. There is even a little over an acre of potential gardening and landscaping opportunities. So come check it all out and become a part of the family oriented Cal Poly Historical Railroad Society.
