The original question got me Googling a bit.

Of course patent has more than one meaning and the SP had lots of land patents, but what I found that was also interesting is that the SP had a connection to the Citizens United case before the Supreme Court. In Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad is the first case of - rather indirectly - stating that corporations had some of the rights of natural persons.
