Strange DPU configuration - WHY?

Tonight off the LA&SL into Salt Lake there came a train with three head end engines, 8 empty auto racks, then a DPU (running), then maybe 30 more empty auto racks, some ethanol tankers (also empty by the sound of them), and finally some covered hoppers.

Why would someone arrange the engines that way?
