Gangway or sandbox. We weren't as sophisticated as today's people! As a kid I had the good fortune to ride on engines on SP Coast Division. One day on SP's Daylight the engineer Ed Whitehead needed to respond to nature's call and set me in his seat while he dropped his overalls and used the sandbox. This was on a 4400 so the sandbox was on the floor in front of the firebox. I'm not sure how he would have handled it if we had power with a tender mounted sandbox. The tough old days without restrooms or air conditioning.
