The earlier history is covered in detail in the book "The History of the Northern Pacific Railroad" by Louis Tuck Renz from Ye Galleon Press of Fairfield, Washington, 1980. The copyright is attributed to Renz in 1980 at Walla Walla, Washington. It is cataloged in the Library of Congress.

I don't remember where I happened onto it; must have been a second hand book store. Maybe Comstock's on Main Street in Auburn, WA. It seems like I have seen an abbreviated paper back version of it.
