Mars lights and Gyralights, while very effective, were a maintenance problem due to their moving parts. They contained a motor and I recall a V-Belt and pulleys to rotate the plate holding the headlight elements. The FRA said if the lights are in place on a locomotive they have to be operational. Espee was one of the last holdouts for signal lights on freight diesels.
Interesting picture. All the units visible are EMD; as well I made a HO scale model of SP Tunnel Motor # 8551 many years ago.
