From memory, like many railroads SP originally placed lineside phones in wood boxes and sheds, but they were subject to weather (espcially with their different climates), theft and vandalism. Therefore someone came up with the idea of prefabricating those 3,000lb phone booths that would keep their phone secured.... and they did!
