"Eastern & Portland 97" was actually New Haven 3016. Per Scott Hartley's book, "New Haven Railroad, the Final Decades," page 125, it was one of three 2-8-2s retained for snow-melting service after steam was officially retired in 1953. My understanding is that after filming for the movie in 1958, it was uncermoniously scrapped.
