Great Northwest Railway is a Watco owned property headquartered in Lewiston, Idaho.
Motive power consists of 1 SW 1500 in Watco black and yellow with a Great Northwest logo
on the side, and the road freight uses ex-CN widecab GP40-2's painted in Watco black and yellow. Lewiston is a regional locomotive service location, so motive power from other nearby Watco operations frequently visit Lewiston and can be seen from a public road that
runs between the back side of the East Lewiston Yard and the river. The switch engine can run just about any time 24 hours a day and visits areas outside the East Lewiston Yard.
The road freight operates down river late afternoons or evenings most Sundays through Fridays. A road freight from the BGCM railroad operates into the East Lewiston Yard from upriver one or two days a week operating from a location called Spaulding that is several miles east of the East Lewiston Yard. Get a map of the area, or view the area on Google earth to get an idea where roads are. Lewiston offers many hotels to choose from. A tavern downtown called Effies is famous for it's Effie Burger and worth a visit. Otherwise there are many places to eat. Train lengths vary from 10 to 60+ cars and can be unpredictable, although spring and fall get local ag chemical traffic and boost train lengths. In the summer months, the downriver train runs late evening to night time to reduce problems with heat kinks in the rail as the Lewiston valley can get quite hot.
