It has been a while, but if I remember right many engineers on the San Diegans used the cab car (California and Metroliner) "parking brake" when stopped at stations, and released it as the engine pushed the slack in against it.

Other than the parking brake, the cab car only controls the brake pipe and the engine's brake are controlled by the blended dynamic brakes. But it can vary by commuter agency.
