Mr. Kelly -Nice catch! I lived and worked in the vicinity of Whitehaven and Workington in the early 'nineties, traveling between them on this line. I taught English children the rudiments of German and French in Whitehaven. The DMU's were working antiques with 1950's paint schemes (quite nice, really) and the pace of travel at Parton and Harrington, under the cliffs, was glacial. The rest of the line was a feast for the eyes, and the Lake District was almost immediately adjacent. Nor was the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway small-gauge operation to be sniffed at, even if known as "La'l
Ratty" THanks for this evocation. The other lines mentioned are also well worth a visit, and don't get me started on the numberless preserved railways and musea that dot the country, Foamers…er, trainspotters paradise.
