Having lived in Java, I always thought it was funny that:

1. It is Krakatau not Krakatoa.

2. It is west of Java, not east.

No. 1 has become the standard spelling in English. I can live...

No. 2 was because the movie was already in the can and they said, "Who will know?"

Of course they were right. I have met an awful lot of tourists who were going to Bali and didn't know it was part of Indonesia, which is not exactly a wide spot in the road as it has over 200 million citizens.
