As someone who was very active in the North Carolina chapter of Operation Lifesaver for many years -- they are still using photos I made for them on safety posters and even highway billboards -- this incident left me both sad and angry, because it was very preventable.

News coverage, while not terrible, has left a lot to be desired.

None of the news reports I have seen so far has mentioned that this is CSX's east coast mainline with upwards of 30 trains per day. This will undoubtedly result in at least some CSX detours over NS. There are more than half a dozen Amtrak trains on this line per day, including the AutoTrain.
