Steam Engines Left in the US?

The wife asked an interesting question this weekend as we were watching the FWWR in Grapevine, TX--how many operational steam engines are left in the US? Further, how many of them are running regularly? I know the engine for the FWWR runs most every weekend, I would call that a regular runner. Ditto the ones in Colorado, etc. And I know there are some that run but not regularly, like the 1522 and 3571... I guessed there might be 100 left operational and about 50 running regularly. Any other ideas?
