It's very common to see one or two of the new Amtrak electrics going east on #6. There's no telling just what days it might be, but it seems to happen every 2-3 weeks or so. The latest ones were #638 and 639--forty delivered so far, with thirty to go. When Siemens is ready to ship, two extra units are sent to Sacramento (usually on Capital Corridor #520), where a Sacramento-based crew takes them across town to the Siemens plant, picks up the electric(s), and takes them down to Oakland. Usually (but not always), they then head east on the next day's #6.
There's no reason for Amtrak to handle the SMART DMUs, since they're not headed anywhere Amtrak runs.
