It gets complicated. One can say, basically, when they object to be called girls, but then it is sometimes too late.

I've seen 70-year-olds say "They had a night out with the girls." But they might go off in high dudgeon if called one. It can be a minefield.

I know one lady of a certain age who returns all mail addressed to "Ms. X" with a note that there is no "Ms. X" at this address. And signs it "Mrs. X". But there are those who get indignant if they aren't addressed as Ms., although that is getting less common.
