Railcars in that part of the world are equipped with sirens sounding just like those on a fire truck here in America. It does take some getting used to, but it's an effective warning when a train approaches a grade crossing. And outside North America,locomotive operator are known as "drivers". The term "engineer" is reserved for "civil" engineers (i.e the folks who lay out track work, build and inspect tunnels and bridges, etc.)
