611 was in a derailment and overhauled just before being taken out of service in 1959. It was then donated to Virginia Museum of Transportation in 1960.

In 1981 N&W leased 611 and completed restoration in 1982 and was run until the end of 1994 when NS quit excursions.

NS resumed excursions in 2011 and in 2013 the Virginia Museum of Transportation started fundraising for 611 overhaul, support and facilities with NS also contributing money. Overhaul was started in 2014 and finished in 2015.
