The technology for clean-burning fluidized-bed combustion of coal existed 20+ years ago. The central problem is the U.S. didn't have, and still doesn't have a comprehensive energy policy. As long as there are obstructionist politicians who serve special interests that consider energy resource use as wrong, evil, bad or whatever, the United States will continue to struggle with the issue.
