Pickup Truck Derails Light Rail Train

Pickup truck hit a "Green Line" light rail train in Sacramento; ran red light. Truck driver critically injured; no report of passenger injuries.

The Sacramento RT "Green Line" at present is a bobtail run using a single car from downtown to Richards Blvd. (someday, to the airport!), and seldom has passengers. Effectively, it's a streetcar. A mid-day run likely would have had nobody aboard other than the driver. One must wonder, though, how a pickup truck could get up enough speed on the normally very congested J Street to derail a train. The Green Line "wrapped" car is one of the older (1980s) Siemens models.
Biggest problem with the wreck was that it cut off the Gold Line from the Amtrak Station for a while; everything's apparently running again this evening.
