Hmmm, I don't think it's a bunch of "California transplants," but it's clear they aren't knowledgeable about geology. They also didn't mention the real No. 1 problem the new siding would bring with it -- the construction itself, which could indeed harm some of the wildlife there. Also, it's the news media's job to report on stuff like this, and this reporter --- even if it is obvious he doesn't know much about trains, either --- seemed fair and level-headed, which is all you can ask.
