As long as the pollsters don't tout their results as "Nationwide". Probably 98% of the responders to this poll in a NJ Politics Website will likely be from NJ, just as a poll of readers in some Casper, WY newspaper will likely be locals. If they go to their local Representative with the results, it will correctly reflect the desires of the local population.
Sadly, a large percentage of these Northeastern elites probably think geocentricly and don't even know that Wyoming exists other than that buffalo and antelope live there. And, if there happens to be a person who lives there, that person is a potential source of revenue to tap for their urban desires. :)
