Welding Questions

I have a welding question so some of the railroad maintainers that may be watching this.

Listening on the radio and you may hear a thermite welder calling for track and time behind a train. I was curious when and/or what makes it appropriate to weld with thermite. I understand that the bond, if done properly, is superior.

Also have a friend that is a welder on the Alaska pipeline. They have to degauss the welding site on the account that the pipeline acts as a big compass needle. Is this an issue on rail also?

Hey thanks,

Rob
