Google Cadweld (Erico) they specialize in thermite welding for many electrical connections. Basically a thermite weld heats all properties with thermite to fuse them together. Mainly now with rail ends to make CWR. The only preparation needed is moderately clean material and usually for a large thermite weld like on rail ends some preheating, to allow the material to heat thoroughly. Structurally, after the weld, you have one piece of metal. No joints or voids.
