Peak this afternoon at Mather Field was 106F (heat index 98F - it's a dry heat); and Ben Bolt (SE of Folsom) was 108F. Mather down to 102 at 8 PM; Ben Bolt holding at 106 (it's in the foothills so it stays warmer longer).
Current prediction for Wednesday is warm too - 107 at Mather & 108 in Folsom. 114 in Redding. 106 in Fresno. 104 in Bakersfield and Roseville. Those are a bit toasty for the Sac Valley, though not pushing any records. Mid-100s are normal for the San Joaquin Valley from late May through September, and I went to many fireworks shows and 4th parties in the Fresno area when it was still over 100 at midnight. A little cooling on Thursday near the Delta, then all over on Friday. Might even be sub-100 for the 4th - hooray!
Sac RT seemed to be running a bit slow tonight - they often hold it to 45 or so (instead of 55) in hot (over 100) weather, and accumlated delay runs up to 10-15 minutes by the end of commute time. That's probably as much to save power (FlexAlert today!) as to watch for track kinks.
So what are the criteria for heat-related TSRs on regular railroads in inland California? Considering the *normal* summer temps in the mid-100s with winter temps only rarely getting below 25 or so, tracks presumably are normalized to something hotter than is typical Back East.
