That yard is the interchange yard. The large white roof building to the east is the Santa Fe freight house at 1420 4th Street. When I worked at China Basin during the mid 60's there was still a fairly active interchange between the Espee and the Santa Fe. For instance much (all?) of the newsprint for the SF Chronicle during that period came in on the Santa Fe from Oklahoma paper mills on the Frisco. Barge to SF then SP to the Chronicle printing facility off Army Street.
