From the KCRA story ( [
www.kcra.com] ), it looks like it happened right at the end of a bridge (low concrete trestle). Train would have been moving 50-60 mph at that point, so even if a sun kink had appeared in front of the engine (and not after it went by) there would have been no way to stop or even slow down much. Temps were around 108F in the area yesterday afternoon. In this morning's update, it sounds like the derailed cars have been cleared or removed and the line should be open again later today.
UP apparently briefly the let reporters in to shoot pics during the initial response, then shooed them back to the road crossing which is some distance away. One ground shot seemed to show superficial damage to the bridge but most of the derailment happened off of it. The reporter said "It could have been worse..." but didn't elaborate - clearly they were thinking of mentioning oil trains but didn't. It didn't block any crossings so local road traffic was not affected.
News said Amtrak had a 1/2 hour delay on the northbound afternoon SJ heading to Sac, and 1 1/2 hr delay on the SB in late afternoon. Not quite right. From Amtrak's status listing: yesterday's 704 (sched to leave Sac at 4:55PM) left 52 minutes late and arrived in Fresno 2:14 late. 703 to Sac, sched to arrive 1130PM, got there at 0015. This morning's 702 left Sac only about 8 minutes late, but the status page is still "estimating" a 7:45AM Stockton arrival at 0812. Presumably the dances at Haggin and Elvas are still going on ...
