Mount Vernon, WA Area

I got the opportunity to stay in Mount Vernon about a half mile away from the BNSF tracks recently. It was a non railfan trip unfortunately (sniff), and I must have heard trains every hour if not more in the overnight hours. I saw a few coal movements to/from Vancouver, Canada

Lots of industry and branchlines, but how many trains or train movements through Mount Vernon in 24 hours on average? Any good places to watch trains besides the station downtown?

I usually go as far north as Everett, and stick to the south Puget Sound area, so I'm not familiar with this area, but it might be worth a visit again.
