On January 23rd, 1957, Glendale Tower (formerly located at the east end of the passenger platform near Brand Bl. undercrossing at the current Glendale passenger station on Metrolink's Valley Subdivision) closed. This Tower was a wooden building and was torn down about 6 months after it closed. Although the P.E. stopped crossing the S.P. there sometime in 1955, this Tower remained active but only controlled the crossover (that existed at that time) to the "Glendale Slide" track. This Tower was never a train order office so the employees that staffed it were strictly a "Leverman". The levers in the Tower were flop-over type, similar to those that were found at Terminal Tower at LA Union Station (formely known as LAUPT.) J.A. (Jim) Mahan was the last operator to work this Tower when it closed. H.H. (Herbie) Lube was also working at Glendale Tower right before it closed. Both men went down to the next interlocking, famously known as Dayton Ave. Tower. This is where Herbie stayed until that Tower closed on March 13, 1993. Jim worked at many other stations including the 5 other S.P. Towers that existed in the LA Area from the time he hired on in June of 1954 to the time Dayton Ave. Tower closed. Both of these men are now retired, Jim lives in San Fernando and Herbie lives in Arcadia. I can remember viewing railfan photographer Herb Johnnson's (deceased in October 2003) pictures that he took of steam engines pulling SP passenger trains past this Tower in the 1940's These pictures are now located at Pacific Railroad Society's Pacific Railroad Museum in San Dimas (the former AT&SF depot.)
