I found some information online regarding the original DMU specifications for SMART. It does state they preferred a master controller, and that the reverser was to be a rotary switch. (BTW - cost was $3.3 million each and Metrolinx (Ontario, Canada) is purchasing the same through a cooperative add-on order.) I believe it was mentioned several weeks ago that these use the transit standard of handle forward=go, back=stop.

Looking at the photo - is the switch at the left side of the console the reverser or is it the handle on the right? I like the handle on the right for the reverser becuase it looks like a U maze between forward and reverse. I am assuming the T handle is the master controller. Pneumatic disc brakes were requested, but electronically controlled blended brake so would be integrated into the master controller instead of a separate brake handle. Can't really decide where the speedometer is. The right gauge looks to be the load meter, the center and maybe the left look to be standard Wabco/Graham-White brake gauges (older design still popular on transit). Best guess - maybe in full throttle?

Found the following ads on RailJobs.com. Interesting that the engineers are expected to run work trains (locos leased from NWP?). May not be that big of a problem since they are looking for engineers already FRA qualified, but these are very different control arrangements and that may lead to issues later as they train their own engineers. Then again who as I say anything about control arrangements since I've run everything from a steam locomotive to a GE C4 this year. I really hated the desktop on the Dash-9, and still can't get used to the feel of the EPIC/CCB controls. And you have to be crazy to run steam ...
