Escape From Alcatraz...By Rail

With news that evidence suggesting the Anglin brothers may have surived their escape from Alcatraz and eluded detection, thanks to advice from Whitey Bulger, it brings to mind the possibility that the Anglins somehow made it to Tiburon and tried to escape the law via an outbound freight. The main evidence for this possibility being considered is this video which shows that the currents would have made possible an Alcatraz-to-Tiburon routing depending on when the brothers entered the water.

Once in Tiburon the brothers would have seen the massive and empty Tiburon freight yard with numerous buildings but not many railcars. They might have gotten confused, not knowing that for a year the line here had been cut off from the rest of the NWP mainline by the Puerto Suello fire and subsequent collapse.

It's possible they could have hidden in one of the few railway cars in the yard hoping they would catch a freight north that never came. And perhaps while hiding in these cars, they were loaded on the Santa Fe carfloat and barged over to Richmond, a second nautical voyage in a matter of hours.

But the Tiburon yard, while disconnected from the NWP main, still had a couple dozen mechanical and stores employees accroding to newspaper article from the period. It was only in 1963 that these were moved elsewhere on the line north of Puerto Suello. In 1962, presumably, most of the yard buildings would still been standing.

And they would have all provided excellent hiding places for the escapees.

But they would have been waiting in vain to catch a freight out of Tiburon because the only job there was the horseshoe freight which would have been taking loads out of Tiburon, not empties. There best chance would've been the car float to Richmond.

Once in Richmond, with a major manhunt underway, they may have been able to slip away and get to a bus station to arrange for a pickup.

In the precellphone days of 1962, one imagines there would have been numerous places they could make a phone call.

This assumes they were able to get out of the Richmond yard. It's possible of course that they caught a freight out of Richmond, posing as hoboes, right after getting their via the car float.

Of course they probably drowned when their raft inevitably failed.
