One ML employee caused accident running a signal-Chatsworth, one accident from the Glendale mess-not caused by ML, one accident from the presumed suicide by train at Buena Vista-film company held liable in court, one head on with BNSF-BNNSF crew fell asleep and ran signal..... and now, the Oxnard derailment-which was not caused by ML's actions.....

Some of these had a high number of fatalities (Chatsworth and Glendale) which have skewed the numbers on that. But, except for Chatsworth, under Violia's incompetent mismanagement, and it's multiple failures to enforce rules, follow required federal safety protocol's, or conduct proper discipline, none of these were caused by 'unsafe" ML actions.

There is no statistical evidence that push pull is any more or less safe than with a locomotive on the point. There is evidence that there may be a serious design flaw in the Rotem pilots, which caused the train to actually derail in what should have been a one sided encounter with a small trailer. And that is what killed the engineer and caused all of the casualties at Oxnard. This is the reason for the temporary addition of locos to both ends of ML.

ML has been extremely unlucky, as has Metro North, since 2005, in both the number and severity of accidents, compared to some other commuter properties. And, it's not about ML PR, it's about actual safety, as it appears to be about a serious Rotem design flaw, that the FRA should have tested for and caught, before ever certifying these cars.
