That is why Shattuck and Adeline are so wide. It is useful on Shattuck, but the city is now trying to figure out what to do with Adeline. BART doesn't run under it and there is not enough traffic for its width. One proposal is to move the street to one side of the right of way and use the other side for parks and apartments. Adeline runs right next to the Ashby BART station and is close to shopping. An ideal location for non car owners. But the nimbys are already out in force and many of them can't wrap their minds around apartment buildings with no parking.

If an apartment in Berkeley has no parking, the residents do not qualify for residential parking permits. Trying to have a car under these conditions is a true mark of insanity, but the nimbys still expect that it would flood the neighborhood with cars.
