After Modoc Northern acquired them, the units were apparently painted by American Motive Power (a contractor in Danville, NY) then sent to NRE in Dixon, ILL, for drawbar work. How much, if any, mechanical and electrical work was done by either facility is unknown, as both units had numerous mechanical and electrical issues when MN received them. From what I've been told, MN was able to make one of the units (651?) operable for a short period of time, but within year (or less) both units were out of service. Given their condition and the fact that they'd been stored for years, I'm sure Western Rail had to expend a lot of time and effort to make them serviceable.
