Here is something from the Auburn [Ca] Journal I just found and might of interest

The Mountain Quarry Railroad from Auburn to El Dorado County, crossing the American River at the still-standing bridge of the same name, lasted less than 40 years. The Pacific Portland Cement Company-built railroad was used to ship limestone quarried in the Cool mine to the then-Southern Pacific connection in Auburn near the present-day Overlook Park. Laid in 1912, the rails were removed and turned into World War II armaments. But concrete pillars from trestles still can be seen along canyon hiking trails. And, of course, the stately bridge still dominates the canyon-bottom landscape.
