Much of the ROW through Glendale is now fenced, vehicle access gated and blocked, it is covered with no trespassing signs, and highly patrolled. It is now largely a "sealed" corridor and they will cite you, There aren't that many grade crossings left either, and many have ped warnings, or even ped gates, so even most pedestrian access is highly limited now. As a result, you don't have the sheer volume of stupid-cidal behavior (e.g. jogging on RR tracks with earbuds blaring) on the Glendale ROW, as that you have on the ROW through San Clemente and some of the SD Beach cities. And, you actually have to pretty much intend to blow all of that off to successfully "interface" with any oncoming choo-choo......

Suicides are only a part of total RR trespasser deaths, but maybe the new nets to catch folks jumping off of the Bay Area Bridges, explain the seeming recent "surge" in Bay area RR trespasser deaths. Some folks have got awful problems and don't see ways out, it's too bad, though it would be nice to spare others the inconvenience.... Unfortunately, many actually seek attention from the disruption they will inflict on others, or worse, believe some of the nonsense, so often repeated, even on this site, about the magic RR slot machine that will pay out to your family..... Often excessive news coverage of such events and/or repeating of such dubious nonsense about the mythical RR slot machine to the desperate and/or ignorant, only encourages more such behavior by other poor deluded souls.

Fencing is going in on almost all urbanized ROW corridors and it actually does seem to help with much of the more obvious stupid. Accidents and service disruptions cost operators and passengers real money and real time, and the likelihood of cost recovery from those killed while trespassing, in most of these tragic cases, is virtually nil, so these investments often do have positive cost benefit ratios, where you have a high level of such incidents due to stupid behavior on or around the tracks. Suicides are harder to prevent than most kinds of death by stupid, especially if folks are really motivated, and such investments may have little effect on that.
