BART spends a fortune - it is a very expensive outfit - on grade separation, sprawling stations, signalization and automation. BART's payroll is way too big; driverless reduces these staffing expenses to keep fares low.

A driver, conductor, operator, motorman - whatever you want to call them - locked up in a cab can do nothing in the way of enforcement. Cameras everywhere and cops are about all you can do to keep the passengers secure.

Driverless means the unions will find it much harder to go on strike trying to extort money using gridlock they have tried to legislate by getting rid of bus competition and no more bridges.
