I always had to go to Macy's in SF for Christmas shopping, not to buy much (too expensive; most of our real shopping was at Emporium, where they also had carnival rides on the roof of both the downtown and Stonestown stores) but to see the windows, and the HUGE Marklin layout up on the toy floor (yes, a whole floor for Christmas). Union Square area had some wonderful Christmas-decorated show windows, including City of Paris with their huge tree in the rotunda (now Nordstroms; the downtown Emporium on Market Street also had a rotunda with a 4-story tree).
