An interesting film from the mid-1960's that may be of interest to the union rails here. In the film, railroaders share their boots-on-the-ground observations on the state of railroads, the decline of passenger trains, and how to keep themselves from getting hurt on the job. The film is 30 minutes long, so it requires a bit of time investment to watch. For the railfans, there are also a few vintage diesels to be seen in the film.

By the way, I found one of the comments by a Youtube viewer thought-provoking. It is copied below:

In the 1960's we had it drummed into our heads to squander billions on NASA bullsh_t and on LBJ's dirty little wars while everything else began going straight to hell in the proverbial breadbasket. The federal government built the interstate system and gave the trucking industry an unfair advantage through both taxation and the railroads' over regulation through the I.C.C. The cultural perception was that airlines were glamarous and "cool" whilst passenger trains were outmoded. Railroad jobs started to be killed off at a higher rate of mortality than 18 and 19 year old conscriptees too impoverished to buy their freedom with a student deferment. Visiting Europe in 1969 was an eye opener as rail transport was premium and passenger service went practically everywhere. It is outrageous how The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave allowed its rail industry to crumble. The 60's were a miserable, angry and polarizing time, and the sad fate of the American railroads symbolize this as few things can.

I have to agree with that summary!
