I think I read in a book about the INPR that part of the terms of lease or sale from UP is that UP owns all or part of the salvage rights to the steel. If that is the case it means INPR wouldn't get much from abandonment but that didn't stop them from turning Weiser to New Meadows into a trail.
I just hope that a non profit outfit can take over, maybe someone with lower operating costs can make a go of it, last year I saw all the time on TML's Facebook page that trains were sold out.
