Marin County originally was part of the Bay Area Rapid Transit District. After competent engineering studies determined that BART trains could not operate safely across the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin county "reluctantly" withdrew from the district according to reporter Harre Demoro.

Some preliminary studies were made for a BART tunnel from San Francisco to Sausalito but there was no way to obtain the needed funding.
