Welcome to LA Stan,

I am with one of the local agencies that works with MTA and I have never had any problems with photography in public places on the MTA or Metrolink system. There are areas in and about Union Station that should not be entered without permission, but photography from platforms or public areas adjacent to the right of way has never been a problem.

Our LA County Sheriff's and MTA Fare Inspectors, who patrol Metro and Metrolink trains, are generally quite friendly and familiar with rail enthusiasts. Avoid running on platforms, blocking passengers (all trains are hauling record volumes), have proper fare payment proof, and don't cross pedestrian pathways while bells and gates are operating, and, if instructed by law enforcement, do as they request.

Always stay in public "safe" areas, never enter closed areas, or rights of way, and you shouldn't have a problem. This is also good advice to those of you coming out to photograph ATSF 3751 on its June run to San Diego, or visiting for the ATSF HSTS Meeting in Riverside, or the NMRA Convention in Anaheim this summer.
