As a side note, I can remember staying overnight at Crest in the summer of
1996. One of the loneliest places I've been. Several miles off of the highway and
I can remember seeing distant lights that seemed like they were 10 miles away. I
had to keep getting up in the middle of the night because some kind of desert varmint,
maybe a prairie dog or something, kept crawling under the hood of my Toyota pickup.
He was making enough noise that I felt like I had to get up and chase him off or I'd
end up stuck out there with all of my vehicle wiring chewed up. It was an ongoing
battle all night so I didn't sleep much. One train came through in the middle of the
night heading south if I recall. Early in the morning a northbound, which would be
SP west I think, rolled through with the SP 8514 on the point. Thanks for the memory
Greg, I'll bet Crest is even lonelier in the winter.
