Once-upon-a-time, traffic on Lake Pend Oreille, required a drawspan in the Northern Pacific bridge. No longer needed by the time the highway bridge was built.

So it is the drawspan section where BNSF is augmenting the bridge piers.

The name of the lake is locally pronounced "ponderay".
