The DAR concept is still around, but with more limits on it - it's called "paratransit" officially, and is used mainly for elderly & disabled passengers. OTOH, I remember those original, strange (propane?) DAR buses from SJ - the ones that didn't burn showed up briefly in Santa Cruz, and didn't work much better there. Replaced quickly with conventional buses that were more comfortable and reliable.
Interesting, also, that the original LRVs in San Jose were replaced very early (<15 yr. old, when 30 is the normal schedule) due to reliability problems (shades of Muni's Boeing cars), but resurfaced in Salt Lake City (refurbed as the startup equipment) and, more recently, Sacramento (also refurbed, almost from the rail up). Have seen a few in Sac; those are BIG beasts compared to the old Siemens cars and even the newer CAF. And no, even after refurb they're not compatible with the old stuff; they're kept in fixed consists.
