UP Shasta route operations

I'm curious about current operations on the UP Shasta route. Yesterday while in Chico I watched two southbound freights roll by with DPU. Is this a new operating procedure? Do the trains originate in Portland or Eugene? Do they run DPU both directions Roseville - Portland? Did the Oregon landslide affect or change operations? Also diesel was selling for Five dollars and four cents a gallion yesterday. Do railroads save fuel by running longer heavier trains with DPU (helpers) Thanks, Paul
