The RR's really didn't like these new fangled "containers" when they were first introduced. You should note that the first container loads, were a domestic move, that should have "obviously" gone such a long distance by "boxcar".
This month, once again, TEU volumes will exceed non intermodal carloads on America's railroads, and the intermodal "container" driven revolution is now seen as a key factor in saving and reviving the RR's, and which allowed them to remain competitive carriers of all types of general merchandise, in our modern world.
And, can you even imagine a mere 15,000 ton crude carrier, in today's world?
