MONTEBELLO — A woman was fatally struck by a freight train in Montebello this morning in what police believe was a suicide.

The crash was reported at 1:47 a.m. near the intersection of Montebello and Olympic boulevards.

Police believe the woman, who died at the scene, intentionally placed herself in the path of the train. Her identity was being withheld pending family notification.

The accident and subsequent investigation prompted the closures of Montebello Boulevard, Greenwood Avenue, Maple Avenue and Vail Avenue between Olympic Boulevard and Mines avenues, police said. By about 6 a.m., the roadways had been reopened except for Montebello Boulevard, police said.

Some delays were reported on Metrolink’s Riverside Line because of “freight congestion” involving the accident, according to Metrolink.
