My fairly new UP series portable is a Kenwood NX210-K2 which does VHF 12.5/25 and digital. UP furnishes them with the longer antenna which usually ends up in your armpit; however mine has the standard "rubber duckie" since I'm usually at close range or within range of one of our repeaters. I find it a cumbersome radio to use because compared with the Motorola's it is "backward" with the antenna on the left and the control knobs to the right so you are constantly reaching around the antenna which is more difficult wearing gloves. It sits in its charger most of the time.
My favorite is the Motorola HT1250; we have a number of them and they are the bulletproof portable version of the "SPECTRA"...in my opinion the finest mobile known to man.
Locomotive radios are from several lesser known manufacturers...however; the SPECTRA ASTRO meets the narrow banding specs and is what OPR uses purchased on the used market since Motorola is not interested in the railroad market any longer opting for the more lucrative public safety market.
